Best Practices for Supporting LGBTQ2SIA+ Youth and Families When Considering Mandatory Reporting

Mandatory Reporting is an important pathway to support but it should be considered the last step you take, only if you think a child’s immediate safety or health is at risk. ODHS emphasizes that mandatory reporters should consider Community Supporting as an essential step in the mandatory reporting process. Before and beyond mandatory reporting, work to connect folks to as many unique community supports that may be meaningful to them. In Oregon, there’s an overrepresentation of LGBTQ2SIA+ youth in foster care and who are unhoused. It’s important to follow both: mandatory reporting laws when necessary, AND ensure you are providing equal or more support directly to youth and families. This can increase supportive behaviors that can prevent a mandatory report, and all that it may bring. Youth’s identity, circumstances, etc may shift whats available to them which is also why community support is vital here.
